Worth the drive

Not Far

A little further out, but each makes a great day trip from the house. Drive times are approximate.

  • Sand Harbor & the East Shore~40 min

Lake Tahoe's clearest water and granite coves. Go early on a warm day — the parking lot fills fast.

  • Kings Beach & North Shore~30 min

Sandy public beach, casual lakefront lunch, and easy access to the north-shore towns.

  • Emerald Bay & Vikingsholm~1 hr 15 min

The postcard overlook, plus a steep short hike down to the Vikingsholm mansion and Fannette Island.

  • Donner Summit — Judah Loop & PCT~25 min

High-country hiking with golden aspens by late September and long views from the Pacific Crest Trail.

  • Reno — Riverwalk & Midtown~45 min

A change of pace: the Truckee River walk, the National Automobile Museum, and dinner in Midtown.

  • Fall Color Drive — Hope Valley~1 hr 30 min

Worth the drive in late September/early October for some of the Sierra's best aspen color along Hwy 88/89.
